General Grant accepts the surrender of the Confederate forces at Fort Donelson, besieged by land and the Mississippi River with the battleships Louisville, De Kalb, Pittsburg, Carondolet, Tyler, and Conestoga. The Confederate forces take 14,623 prisoners.
