Hezbollah’s military chief, Imad Mughniyeh, one of America’s most wanted men, is killed by a car bomb in Damascus. He had been wanted by Israeli and American intelligence agencies for at least twenty years. He was held responsible for a long list of terrorist attacks: the 1982 massacre at the American embassy in Beirut, the bombings of the American and French barracks in Beirut, the 1985 hijacking of flight TWA 847 from Athens to Rome, numerous kidnappings of Westerners, the attack on the Israeli center in Buenos Aires, the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers that sparked the war in southern Lebanon, and finally, he is believed to be involved in the attacks of September 11, 2001.
