American U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers, a Soviet prisoner, is handed over to the Americans in Berlin along with student Frederic Pryor in exchange for KGB agent Colonel William Fisher (aka Rudolf Abel). This event is the subject of Spielberg’s film “Bridge of Spies,” starring Tom Hanks. Gary Powers had been captured 22 months earlier over Sverdlovsk, after his plane was shot down.
