Paris. The peace treaty is signed: Italy cedes Briga and Tenda to France, most of Venezia Giulia to Yugoslavia, Rhodes and the Dodecanese to Greece, and loses all its colonies. De Gasperi had traveled to the United States the month before, not at the invitation of the American government, but at the invitation of Time magazine editor Henry Luce, who had organized a conference in Cleveland. De Gasperi returned to Italy with a $100 million loan and $50 million for Italy’s cooperation during the war, as well as material aid in the form of equipment and raw materials. Shortly thereafter, the Marshall Plan was also launched: $13 billion for reconstruction in Europe, non-repayable.
