Peace between Frederick Barbarossa and Pope Alexander II, who obtained recognition of his office and the renunciation of any imperial claim to Matilda’s possessions and those of Lazio. With the League, Frederick limited himself to concluding two truces lasting six and fifteen years. The emperor repeatedly attempted to divide the municipalities during negotiations, but they, strong in their military supremacy, responded with contempt and thinly veiled threats. The truce held. The peace was signed in Constance on June 25, 1183.
