Otranto. An army of Hungarian mercenaries, composed of 300 knights, 400 infantry, 5 captains, and a robust artillery, was stationed outside the walls of the city, still in Ottoman hands. The Hungarians had been fighting the Ottomans for decades, to counter their advance into the heart of Europe. The Doge had notified the Duke of Ferrara of the Grand Turk’s death on May 20th, and the Serenissima had only confirmed the news to the Pope on June 2nd.
