Early 1930s

Berkeley: Professor Robert Oppenheimer and his doctoral student Melba Phillips briefly date. One evening, he takes her to Grizzly Park, overlooking the San Francisco Bay. At one point, the eccentric professor gets out of his car and tells the girl he’s going for a walk and will be back soon. He walks along the beach, gets lost in his thoughts, gets home, and goes to bed. After a while, the girl drives home in Oppenheimer’s car and calls the police, who search for the professor’s body on the beach. The next day, the San Francisco Chronicle headline reads, “Forgetful Prof. Parks Girl, Takes Self Home.”
