Before dawn on December 7, Hawaii time (December 8 local time), the first Japanese troops landed in Kota Bhary, northern Malaysia. The British had intercepted and decrypted Japanese messages at the embassy in London and were therefore expecting an attack on Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, and the (American) Philippines. The real surprise would be Hawaii.
