Charles Darwin set sail from Davenport aboard the Beagle, a ten-gun brigantine commanded by Fitz Roy. The mission’s purpose was to complete surveys of the coasts of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, Chile, Peru, and several Pacific islands, and to make chronometric observations.
