NASA’s NEAR probe arrives at the asteroid Eros. Due to a software problem, the probe enters safe mode, and it must wait until the next opportunity, February 14, 2000, for actual insertion into orbit around Eros. After insertion into orbit (a challenge on an asteroid due to its low gravitational pull), it will land there in February 2001.
