Nino Bixio dies in Indonesia, killed by yellow fever. He had traveled there on his ship, the Maddaloni. Bixio was Garibaldi’s right-hand man in the Expedition of the Thousand. A staunch anticlerical, he had threatened to throw the Pope and all the cardinals into the Tiber.
