Israel. The law formally annexing the Golan Heights, originally the Syrian provinces of Kuneitra and Fiq, is passed. These fertile heights, suitable for agriculture, are key to controlling the Upper Galilee and the Jordan River, as well as the water resources of a third of the state of Israel. Furthermore, the Golan Heights, from an altitude of 1,100 meters, dominate the plains below to the northeast, where the Syrian capital, Damascus, is located, not far away.
