Autumn 1991

Swedish-speaking Finn, Linus Torvalds introduces the Linux operating system. It is based on Richard Stallman’s GNU, which in turn is based on UNIX. Linux contains 10,000 lines of code and is offered publicly as freeware and open source. It will soon lead to a tsunami of peer-to-peer volunteer collaboration that will become a development model. After just a year, there will be tens of thousands of developers online.
