A shaft collapses in the San José mine, 800 kilometers from Santiago, Chile. Officials are still missing from the whereabouts of 33 miners. Contact is later established, and construction of a tunnel to reach them begins. Only in mid-October will they all be freed, in an incident that has kept the world on tenterhooks.
