Gulf of Tonkin, Indochina. Captain George Morrison, commanding the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard, is informed that the destroyer Maddox has been attacked by North Vietnamese naval units. This incident, a few days later, will lead the United States to decide on military escalation in Vietnam. Captain George Morrison has a son named Jimmy, who is studying at the University of California. The following year, “Jim” Morrison informs his father that he is joining a rock band. His father responds that this is simply ridiculous, since he believes Jimmy can’t sing, and suggests that he get a real job.
