The Russian front runs through the village where Mikhail Gorbachev is a boy: Privolnoye. The front is close enough for Mikhail to see the Katyusha bombers with their deafening hiss. After a few days, the Wehrmacht crowds the village, only to abandon it almost immediately, heading for the fields of Baku. The village will return to the Red Army in January 1943.
