After the disaster at Custoza, the Piedmontese government finally decided to give credence to a guerrilla and privateer commander recently arrived from South America: Giuseppe Garibaldi. He received orders to operate with a detachment of volunteers in the Bergamo Prealps. He waged a relentless guerrilla warfare and, finally, overwhelmed by Austrian superiority, managed to bring the last 60 men remaining at his side back to Piedmont.
