The single-stage-to-orbit DC-X flies for the first time, albeit only for a few hundred meters, then makes a controlled landing. The test is led by Pete Conrad, a McDonnell Douglas executive, the third man on the Moon with Apollo 12, and an astronaut on Gemini 5, Gemini 11, and Skylab 1-2.
