Japan. The Japanese authorities were terrified that American soldiers might do to Japanese women what their own soldiers had done in the occupied territories. Three days after the surrender, the Ministry of the Interior ordered all police officers to organize “comfort services” for the Allied conquerors: Japanese women recruited for the Entertainment and Leisure Association (RAA), which required the sacrifice of their bodies as a patriotic duty, so that respectable Japanese women could walk the streets in peace.
