Johannes Kepler’s mother, Katharina Guldenmann, was imprisoned on charges of witchcraft. Kepler abandoned his career as an astronomer (and astrologer) to become his mother’s defense attorney, winning the case the following year. However, Katharina Guldenmann died shortly after being released from prison.
