Florence. The inheritance of his uncle Francesco da Vinci briefly brings Leonardo da Vinci back to Florence. Francesco, perhaps aware that Leonardo had been broke for years and had received nothing since his father’s death, leaves Leonardo his plot of land. This leads Leonardo’s brothers to sue him. The matter drags on in the courts for several years. Even the King of France writes in support of Leonardo, but the courts fail to resolve the matter, and ultimately, upon his death, he leaves his property to his brothers and not to Francesco Melzi. This was perhaps the agreement reached.
