August 13 – October 16, 1782

Great Siege of Gibraltar. The Spanish and French besiege the Rock of Gibraltar from land and sea. The English are bombarded by mortars and cannons mounted on large rafts. This is the third attempt by the Spanish in the same century (previous attempts were in 1705 and 1727). However, the rafts, poorly defended, are attacked by the English, who burn them one by one. The bad weather of the following weeks does the rest. The attempt fails completely.
