Venice. Cholera, fueled by the lack of drinking water and sanitation, causes 2,788 deaths. The city, besieged by the Austrians for two months, is exhausted. The epidemic and hunger deal the final blow to the populace, who rise up in revolt. Manin signs the surrender on August 22nd. The last embers of the fire that had broken out in Palermo twenty months earlier are extinguished.
