Frank Drake pointed the Green Bank radio telescope in West Virginia (part of the Ozma project to search for intelligent civilizations in space) at Epsilon Eridani; it recorded regular series of eight pulses per second for five minutes; two weeks later it was discovered that it was a secret military experiment for radar countermeasures with transmitters on high-altitude aircraft.
