8:45 a.m. Richmond is in flames, the capital of the Confederacy falls into Federal hands. But Grant realizes that Lee and his army would not be easily captured and senses that he would escape into the night, so he prepares his troops for pursuit. Which promptly happens, with the escape westward. Grant and his army are ready and manage to hinder and forestall the enemy’s movements.
