The Treaty of San Francisco comes into force between Japan and the nations that suffered its aggression during World War II. The reparations will be relatively modest compared to those imposed on Germany in World War I: $550 million to the Philippines, $300 million to Korea, $223 million to Indonesia, $39 million to Vietnam, $20 million to Burma, $25 million to Singapore, $25 million to Malaysia, and slightly less for Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Mongolia. The United States does not ask for money, only territory for its military bases, including Okinawa.
