France. Maria Luisa dies of smallpox. She is the daughter of Maria Beatrice d’Este (of the Duchy of Modena), former Queen of England. Maria Luisa’s brother, James III (declared King of England by Louis XIV, but without a kingdom), also falls ill with smallpox but manages to overcome the disease.
