The IDEAL X, a former World War II oil tanker, departs from the port of Newark, USA, bound for Houston, Texas. It’s packed with standard-sized containers that fit perfectly inside each other. These are the first containers, which will enable the automated transport of huge quantities of goods, dramatically reducing shipping costs and forever changing world trade. The cost of unloading a ship at a port suddenly drops from $5.83/ton to $0.16/ton. However, the containers’ full success will only come with the contract with the US Army for the Vietnam War.
