Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama set sail directly from Malindi, Kenya, to India. He arrived in Calicut less than a month later. In a single expedition, he added 9,000 kilometers to the route to India. He then returned home after a very difficult journey, during which half his crew, including his brother Paulo, died.
