A British Petroleum (BPE) oil platform (now called Beyond Petroleum) catches fire and then sinks in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil that will continue to leak from the field for weeks will cause a massive environmental disaster. Incredibly, scientific analyses conducted six months later at various sites in the Gulf of Mexico reveal no significant concentrations of pollutants.
