Los Alamos. Edward Teller, in a then-secret meeting, reports on the ENIAC computer’s lengthy calculations on his hydrogen bomb (The Super), demonstrating its feasibility. ENIAC was extremely inefficient: only 5% of its time could be spent on actual calculations, while the remainder had to be dedicated to repairs, troubleshooting, setup, and testing. At the same meeting, Johnny von Neumann and Fuchs decide to collaborate on their patent (Los Alamos secret patent application number S-5292X, “Improvements in method and means for utilizing nuclear energy” – April 1946), the details of which Fuchs will later reveal to the Soviets.
