Second Battle of Gaza: Second British assault on the Ottoman Empire’s fortified defenses. Pro-British Jews also developed a spy organization to inform the British of Ottoman troop movements. One of the codes used window shutters. Sara Aaronsohn, one of the commanders of this organization called NILI, had a house overlooking the Mediterranean. She would signal British ships by opening or closing a specific window. In addition to shutters, carrier pigeons were also used. However, one of the pigeons was captured by the Ottomans, the organization was dismantled, and its members executed. Sarah Aaronsohn committed suicide on October 9, 1917, to avoid revealing secrets under torture.
