Thomas Alva Edison founded the Edison Portland Cement Company with $11 million in capital and sought a headquarters in western New Jersey. He found one in Ogden, where he built a factory and row houses for workers. The business failed to take off and was forced to close permanently in 1900 and subsequently dismantled.
