German radio broadcasts the news of the discovery of the Katyn massacre. Mass graves filled with tens of thousands of bodies of men and women killed with a single gunshot to the head, their hands tied behind their backs, including thousands of officers. As early as April 15th, two days later, the Soviets blamed the Nazis for the massacre, but the truth would only emerge decades later: the Soviets were solely responsible, with the specific intent of exterminating the Polish ruling class and replacing it with Soviet leadership. A Russian commission of inquiry established Soviet responsibility in 2004, and in 2010 the Duma attributed the blame to Stalin.
