Istanbul. Two armed men enter the courthouse in the Çağlayan district and take prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz hostage in his office. Kiraz is investigating the death of Berkin Elvan, the fifteen-year-old boy who was hit in the head by a tear gas canister during clashes between police and protesters in Gezi Park in the spring of 2013, and died after 269 days in a coma. The two kidnappers are members of the DHKP/C, the People’s Revolutionary Liberation Party/Front, a far-left group founded in the 1990s and responsible for a series of politically motivated terrorist attacks. Late that evening, Turkish security forces intervene. The two kidnappers are killed on the spot. The prosecutor later dies of his injuries in the hospital.
