The Battle of Five Forks was fought southwest of Petersburg, Virginia, during the Appomattox Campaign of the American Civil War. Also known as the “Confederacy’s Waterloo,” it pitted Union General Philip H. Sheridan against Confederate General George E. Pickett of General Robert E. Lee’s army. The Confederate defeat led Lee to the decision to surrender.
