A group of Chechen guerrillas took the staff and patients of an entire hospital (about 2,000 people) hostage in Kizliar, Dagestan; the intervention of the Russian leatherheads caused 78 deaths. The Chechen leader, Raduiev, was captured in 2001 and died in a Russian prison in 2002 under mysterious circumstances.
