Kildin Island, Russia: Off the Murmansk military port, the American submarine Baton Rouge collided with the Russian submarine K-276 Kostroma. The two apparently failed to spot each other in time to avoid the collision. The American was on a covert mission to intercept Russian communications and monitor the movements of Russian submarines to determine who was truly in control of them after the fall of the USSR.
