Second Second Culture Music Festival, held in Bojanovice, Czechoslovakia. Following this festival, all members of the musical group Plastic People of the Universe were arrested and tried on charges of antisocialism, nihilism, and decadence, and sentenced to between eight and eighteen months in prison. This trial inspired Charter 77, a dissident group led by Václav Havel, playwright and future president of Czechoslovakia. A song by Plastic People of the Universe, “100 Points,” sings: “They’re afraid of freedom – They’re afraid of democracy – They’re afraid of the Charter of Human Rights – They’re afraid of socialism – So why the hell are we afraid of them?” Music would never be as politicized as it was in 1970s Czechoslovakia.
