Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins are awarded the Guzman Medal by the French Academy of Sciences. It had not been awarded since 1910. It honors those who distinguish themselves by finding ways to communicate with other celestial bodies, excluding Mars. The exclusion of the red planet is due to the fact that, in the late 19th century, it was believed to be inhabited by intelligent civilizations, and therefore the task of communicating with them was deemed too simple and within reach to be worthy of a medal.
