October 6 – 24, 1973

During the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur (Yom Kippur War), Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack against Israel. Egyptian troops broke through the Israeli defensive line until October 10, while Jordanian and Syrian troops entered Golna. Then, Israel mobilized, and the multi-pronged attack was repelled, resulting in heavy Israeli losses. Israeli troops occupied the entire Sinai and the western shore of the Suez Canal, reaching within range of Cairo, and bombarded the Syrian capital, Damascus. On October 22, the United Nations Security Council imposed a ceasefire, but the conflict was not definitively ended until November 11, with a direct agreement between Israelis and Egyptians at kilometer 101 of the Cairo-Suez highway.
