Arthur Samuel, an engineer at IBM, coined the term machine learning. The technique would experience three waves of enthusiasm and two AI winters of disappointment: the first in the 1970s and 1980s, and the second in the 1990s. At the beginning of the 21st century, computing power, data storage (Big Data), and cloud capabilities would give machine learning a competitive edge, making it applicable to industrial problems.
