USSR. Plesetsk Space Base. Approved by Khrushchev on January 11, 1957, codenamed Angara. It was the first ICBM base aimed at the United States. To this day, very few Westerners have set foot there. At the height of the Cold War, it was the most used launch site in the world. In 1994, it was surpassed by Baikonur. The roads to the launch pad are so bad that in 1992, during Boris Yeltsin’s visit, they almost disabled his limousine. It is used to launch R-7, Zenit, Angara, Rockot, and Tsyklon missiles.
