Himmler was subjected to further interrogation and a further search to ensure he was not hiding any poison. At this point, he broke the cyanide capsule he had placed in a crack between his teeth. The British immediately administered an emetic and pumped his stomach in an attempt to save his life, but after ten minutes of agony, Himmler died. Over the next few days, American and Soviet officials inspected his body to confirm his true identity.
