As many as 1.8 million German soldiers surrendered to the Americans in May alone, fleeing the advancing Red Army. In total, during the war, the Americans, British, and French captured 8 million German soldiers, while the Russians captured 3.1 million, more than a million of whom died in captivity from starvation and hardship.
