The British Signal Intelligence Agency (GC&CS) creates a department to study Soviet codes. Its American partner is kept in the dark. However, the Americans had already created such a department in February 1943. Both evidently understood that the USSR would soon become the enemy after the war. The British project is called Iscot, the American one Venona.
