9:35 a.m.: Eighteen American P-38s shoot down two Japanese planes, killing Yamamoto in one of them. The Americans had intercepted the information about the Japanese high command’s presence. A heated argument then broke out with the British, who believed the Americans had thus risked revealing themselves. Fortunately for the Americans, the Japanese had also transmitted information on different channels, and they believed the enemy had intercepted these.
