Yamamoto, disgusted by the seething nationalists, wrote: “If hostilities were to break out between Japan and the United States, it would not be enough to capture Guam and the Philippines, or even Hawaii and San Francisco. To ensure victory, we would have to march on Washington… I wonder if our politicians… are willing to make the necessary sacrifices.”
