The Gantsch, a passenger ship of the Austrian Lloyd, was blown up by an Austrian mine off the coast of Pola, Istria; the minefield was clearly marked on the nautical charts, but the captain had gone away with a lady and the mate had joined the tail of another ship which unfortunately was the minelayer from which, in vain, attempts were made to signal the Gantsch to abandon the route.
