Czernowitz, Austria-Hungary. The recognition of Yiddish as the national language of the Jews is consecrated. Seventy delegates from many countries participate. Yiddish arose from a fusion of Germanic, Hebrew, and Slavic elements and was spoken by 13 million Jews before 1939. Yiddish culture is at least a thousand years old. It is spoken by Ashkenazi Jews, who represent 92% of the world’s Jews.
